CMS 4450 Digital Video Post Production

Course Description

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, students master the basic terminology, and skills of digital post production, with an emphasis on nonlinear video editing. Fundamentals of visual storytelling—including continuity, pacing, and dramatic structure—are emphasized.

Course Goals

CMS 4450 Digital Video Post Production is an elective class in the CMS program, and its goals align with outcomes 2, 4, and 6 of the CMS program outcomes. A production course, CMS 4450 focuses on the aesthetic and communicative aspects of digital video. Class projects will result in a portfolio of work integrating sound, typography, moving images, and music.

Successful completion of the course indicates that students have demonstrated the following:

  1. A basic understanding of the three primary phases of video creation: pre-production (planning), production (shooting), and post-production (editing);
  2. A basic understanding of editorial transitions, sequencing, and pacing, as each contributes to the meanings of moving-image texts;
  3. A basic understanding of compositing, motion effects, sound design, and titling, as each contributes to the meanings of moving-image texts;
  4. The ability to choose appropriately among different approaches to the attributes listed in (2) and (3), based on the content and contexts of a given video;
  5. The ability to implement these choices effectively.
