Presentations

Students will give a formal, 8-10 minute speech, analyzing a recent news article published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, or the Wall Street Journal. (All the papers require that you register in order to search past articles. The Journal also requires a subscription fee.) The article must have originally appeared between April 1, 2009, and March 30, 2010.

The speech will link the article to the terms and concepts presented by Appadurai and, if relevant, to other texts and topics covered in class.

Each student must find and "claim" a unique article. To claim an article, students should send the article's complete MLA citation to the class email list. (Of course, different newspapers often cover the same story, and follow-up articles are often written about the same event. If a student chooses to present on events already covered by another speaker, he or she must make new connections between the story and our class material.)

Speakers are required to distribute a printed, one-page summary of the speech to everyone in the class. Business attire is required. For men, this means a tie and a suit or jacket/slacks. Women do not need to wear a suit, but they should dress professionally.

The speech will be evaluated using the CSU Speaking Criteria.
