Midterm Exam

The exam will include both objective and short-answer essay questions. It will be closed book and closed notes. Please bring pens (or mechanical pencils) and plenty of paper.

The midterm exam will emphasize our readings from Appadurai. You should be able to identify and work with key terms and concepts from each of the chapters that we have read:

  • "Here and Now" (1-23)
  • "Disjuncture and Difference" (27-47)
  • "Global Ethnoscapes" (48-65)

In addition, the exam will include questions about Maria Full of Grace and the Black (Inter)Nationalism case study.

Sample Questions

  1. What are the two great levers of globalization, according to Appadurai? Give concrete examples of each, either from the text or from our class discussions.
  2. What does Appadurai mean by the term “imagination”? Give examples and details from the text to support your answer.
  3. Appadurai’s argues that ideoscapes now cross cultural and national boundaries. What ideoscapes are shown to be active among the women and men in Maria Full of Grace? Does the film support or challenge Appadurai’s notions about cross-cultural and transnational ideoscapes?
  4. What is the relationship between Indian cinema and the lives of the women interviewed in Mira Nair's film India Cabaret?
