Course Goals

Because CMS 4500 is the capstone class in the Communication and Media Studies (CMS) program, the goals for the class align with those of the CMS program outcomes. Through successful completion of the assignments, students demonstrate high-level reading, writing, and critical thinking skills along with an understanding of selected case studies drawn from global media systems.

Reading and Writing Proficiency

CMS 4500 is intended for senior-level students preparing for careers as professional writers and communicators. Both the reading and the writing assignments demand a high level of proficiency and sophistication. Students must pass the CMS writing assessment given near midterm in order to remain enrolled in CMS 4500. Students who barely pass the assessment should plan to work on a weekly basis in the Center for Academic Assistance, in addition to fulfilling all regular class requirements.
