Study Guides: Stuart Hall
Stuart Hall's paper "Encoding and Decoding in the Television Discourse" (Hunt 46-59) marked a watershed moment in the study of television. A good explanation of Hall's paper is available in Daniel Chandler's Semiotics for Beginners, about half-way down the page.
To help you study, I have recreated the diagram printed in our reading. To reveal the labels for the various "moments" in the encoding and decoding circuit, roll the mouse over the image. (You may have to authorize your browser to allow blocked content.)
