Quizzes
Quizzes on the readings and screenings will be given approximately once a week. Some will be on GA View and will be completed outside of class. Some will be taken in class at the beginning of the period.
The format will vary, including short answer, fill in the blank, paragraph, multiple choice, etc.
If you miss a quiz because of an unexcused absence, you will not be able to make it up. Similarly, if you fail to take a GA View quiz during the required timeframe, you will not be able to take it at a later time.
Preparing for the Quizzes
The quizzes are challenging, and students often ask how they can improve their scores. Here is my advice, which will improve your mastery of the material and therefore your quiz scores:
- If a study guide is available, read it carefully.
- Read or view the assigned texts thoroughly, taking notes. Often, this requires multiple readings or screenings.
- While taking notes
- Pay attention to form as well as content. What are the major components of the piece, and how are they organized?
- Think about the historical and discursive contexts that shaped the material (including the work of theorists).
- Make sure that you recognize the names of the primary agents (e.g. authors, leaders, antagonists) and places.
- Make a special effort to connect this material to topics and materials that we have already covered.
- Bring your notes with you to class.
- Be prepared to offer thoughtful answers to questions and comments posed by me and by your peers.
