Media and Civil Rights

This course focuses on the mutual development and interdependence of television journalism and the American Civil Rights Movement. It also considers the ways that new media (e.g. the Internet, file sharing, and interactive museums) are today used to remember the Movement.

Required Screenings and Field Trips

Approximately 25 hours of video or film screenings will be completed outside of class. VHS or DVD copies of required films or television programs will be available on reserve at the library.

  • CD-ROMs, DVDs, videotapes, and other materials may be placed on reserve at the library.
  • Photocopies and Web sites (announced in class and linked from the schedule) will be assigned throughout the semester.
  • A writer's handbook and college-level dictionary.
